    You've heard it before and it probably has been said for generations...Laughter is the best medicine. So, what exactly does that mean? How can laughter help you heal?

 

   We have all experienced the roaring sound of laughter, it is more contagious than cold! When laughter is shared, it increases happiness and binds people together. Laughter triggers positive physical and energetic changes within the body leading to many healthy benefits.The best part? Laughter is a priceless medicine that is easy to use, fun and free!

 

    A good laugh is a quick and dependable way to bring balance to your mind and body. Laughter can reduce anxiety, stress and pain. Humor lightens burdens, inspires hope, keeps you grounded and connects you to others. It can also help you stay alert and focused. Some events are clearly sad and not occasions for laughter, but most events in life are fairly ordinary giving you opportunity to create some laughter!

 

Physical Health Benefits of Laughter:

 

-Boosts Immunity: Laughter decreases stress hormones while increases infection-fighting cells and antibodies to improve your resistance to disease.

 

-Promotes Relaxation: A hardy laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes.

 

-Decreases Pain: Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals that promote an overall sense of wellbeing, even reducing pain.

   So, how do you make sure to get your daily doses of laughter?  First off, don’t take yourself too seriously. Laugh at yourself, share embarrassing moments and reflect on those times when you took yourself too seriously. Attempt to laugh at bad situations to uncover the irony and absurdity of life; this will boost your mood as well as the mood of others around you. Emulate children as they are experts on playing, taking life lightly and laughing. Keep a reminder handy, like a sticker or note on your computer, to remind yourself to lighten up and laugh. Most importantly, incorporate other healthy ways to deal with your stress so it does not impede your humor and laughter.

 

How to Create Opportunities to Laugh:

 

-Watch a funny You Tube video, movie or TV shows.

 

-Go to a Comedy Club or seek out funny people.-Share a good joke or funny story.

 

-Attend a Laughter Yoga class.

 

-Play and goof around with children or a pet.

 

-Do something silly.

 

Laughter is a powerful healing tool that can be used to promote balance and well-being anytime, anywhere making it truly the best medicine.
